NANAIMO FAMILY LIFE PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
- Volunteer Counselling Program: 8 sessions of one-on-one accessible and affordable counselling is provided to individuals, couples, and adolescents aged 14 years and over. The counselling approach is client centered, solution-focused, and based on a family systems perspective. Counselling services in this program are based on a sliding scale and no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. For intake information please contact reception at 250-754-3331
- Teen Mediation Services: Teenagers and adults often find themselves unable to successfully address differences or needs. The Teen Mediation Service is available upon request and provided by an impartial and professionally trained third party who helps families identify and clarify issues between them, to help youth and the adults in their lives, discover or negotiate solutions to problems. Counselling services in this program are based on a sliding scale and no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. - Mediation Services: This program offers accessible and affordable mediation addressing such issues as divorce and separation, common law, custody and access of children, property division, parent coordination, family conflict, extended and blended family conflict as well as communication coaching and workshop conflict. Mediation services in this program are based on a sliding scale and no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. For intake information please contact reception at 250-754-3331
- Community Psycho-Educational Workshops: These workshops can be taken individually or as an 8 part series, they are open to everyone and the suggested workshop fee is $15.00 per workshop or $100.00 for all eight sessions. Pre-registration is required prior to the workshop date. You can register in advance by calling 250-754-3331, Voice mail 716 and leave your name, phone number, date, and name of the workshop you want to attend. Workshops will be canceled if no one is registered. Workshops are held at 1070 Townsite Rd. A complete list of workshop dates, topics and times are listed under the workshops tab.
- Community Agency Referrals and Public Education: Our counselling clients are carefully screened for issues of abuse, mental health, and drug or alcohol addiction. Where we feel the client is in need of more specialized services, we provide additional support through referrals to other community agencies and community resources.
- Triple P Positive Parenting: A program for families looking to learn new or to enhance their parenting skills and strategies. This Community Partnership program offers free seminars and groups for parents with children from the age of 2 through 14. - Senior Peer Counselling Program: Provides counselling and support to alleviate loneliness and isolation of seniors who are 55 years and older. The service is offered in the home, our office and community. Seniors are encouraged to enjoy healthy ageing through physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
In addition to the community peer support, this program offers speakers for community groups interested in addressing; over all healthy aging and emotional wellness, which may include focus of issues such as, power of attorney, prevention of elder abuse, prescription drug and or alcohol abuse. With our knowledge and experience we are able to tailor these information sessions to your individual needs. The Vancouver Health Authority and Community Donations enable this service to be offered at no cost.
- Grandparents Re-parenting Grandchildren: For many years Nanaimo Family Life Association has offered a program called Grandparents Re-parenting. In the meantime the Parent Support Services Society of BC has been working with many different communities around the province to help establish Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Circles. On two previous occasions the Parent Support Services Society of BC collaborated with Nanaimo Family Life and the Justice Access Centre to host information sessions regarding a new legal resource for grandparents. The Parent Support Services Society of BC and Nanaimo Family Life are collaborating again in hopes of expanding the local support network for grandparents raising grandchildren. Currently we invite any grandparents who are parenting to join us at Family Life every last Wednesday of the month between 10:00 – 12:00 to find support, share information, ideas and resources.

- Beyond Blame: The Beyond Blame Program exists to address the root causes of family violence and abuse in our community. We do so by supporting men to take personal responsibility for, and end their abusive behaviours. We offer a life-changing, therapeutic 20-week group for men who are willing to look at the way they misuse power in their relationships. The program also includes ongoing individual support to the men and their families a they struggle with the aftermath of abuse. This program is much more than anger management-we teach people how to live well with others. Beyond Blame does not believe in shaming, disrespecting or punishing. We believe in supporting what is possible while holding participants accountable for their actions and interactions while in the program and beyond. The next group will commence September 8th 2010; we are accepting applications up to September 7th 2010. - Registered Clinical Counseling: Paula Johnson holds a Masters of Art in Counselling Psychology and received additional training in EMDR, Integrative Body Psychotherapy (IBP), and Cognitive Behavior Therapy. She is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), Educator, and Consultant with extensive experience working with individuals, children, youth, and families for the last 14 years. Her focus in her work with people is life and career transitions, families and parenting, grief and loss, marriage and couples, depression, anxiety, suicide, trauma, and stress related issues. - Life Works is a life skills resiliency based program designed for youth in Nanaimo that will provide an opportunity for youth to engage in creative and meaningful dialogue and learning that supports wellness and resilience. Facilitators deliver the program modules from a strength based, holistic perspective using creative & experiential activity based programming (i.e.: visual arts, drama, sport, music, journaling, cultural activities) to address self esteem, personal boundaries, communication skills, self management, lifestyle choices, relationships etc. For upcoming groups please see below and for more information call reception at 250-754-3331
