Serving Nanaimo, Gabriola Island, and Ladysmith
Better at Home is a program that helps older adults continue living independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities by providing simple non-medical home support services.
This provincially-funded program is managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland and has been offered through Nanaimo Family Life Association for over 8 years.
Through NFLA, our Better at Home Program serves Nanaimo and Lantzville, Ladysmith, and Gabriola Island. Any senior living in one of these communities is eligible to apply.
All of our services are designed to suit the individual needs of the client, and services are delivered by contractors who have been carefully screened to ensure professionalism and safety for our clients.
Service fees are established on an income-based sliding scale with subsidies available for low-income seniors. For some services, there is no charge.
Light Housekeeping—Services include tasks such as vacuuming, mopping, cleaning bathrooms, dusting, cleaning out the fridge, and changing bedding, basic kitchen wipe down, microwave and high tough areas. We do not provide heavy cleaning services, such as washing windows or walls, carpet cleaning, deep cleaning the oven, or moving heavy furniture. Clients are to provide supplies required.
Light Yardwork—Services include tasks such as mowing or edging the lawn, trimming small trees and bushes, raking leaves, weeding and mulching garden beds, watering the garden, and cleaning plants and flower pots. We do not clean gutters or power wash houses. Clients are to provide safe working equipment for the job.
Minor Home Repair—Services include replacing lightbulbs, fixing closet and cabinet doors, fixing a dripping tap, replacing blinds or hanging curtains, shoveling snow, piling wood and/or patching paint. This service is not designed for major repairs, jobs that require tradespeople or any installation of safety related task such as hand railings, shower grab bars or fixing stairs.
Transportation—Services provided for medical and non-medical requests. This service is based upon availability and requires a minimum of 48 hours’ notice to arrange an appointment. Medical appointments are provided at no charge to the client. Any non-medical requests such as going to grocery store, exercise class or to visit a family member will cost $5.00 each way of trip.
Unfortunately, we are not able to provide transportation for persons who use wheelchairs or rely on oxygen tanks.
