The Seniors Peer Counselling program provides counselling and support to alleviate loneliness and isolation of seniors who are 55+ years old. The service is offered in the home, our office, and community. Seniors are encouraged to enjoy healthy aging through physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Seniors Peer Counselling is a support service where older adults (seniors) are trained to provide emotional support to their peers — other seniors — who may be facing life challenges such as:
The counsellors are seniors themselves, which helps through shared experiences and understanding of age-related issues. Our volunteer counsellors are trained individuals who offer emotional support and guidance to people facing life challenges. A volunteer counsellor is a caring, trained member of our team who offers a safe, supportive space to talk. While they are not professional therapists, they are deeply committed to listening with empathy, respect, and without judgment – whether you are feeling overwhelmed, going through a life change, or need someone to talk to. You don’t need to have the right words or know exactly what you’re feeling — your counsellor is here to walk alongside you, one step at a time.
At our organization, counsellors undergo lengthy and intensive training, as well as ongoing supervision, to ensure they provide compassionate, ethical, and effective support. Our counsellors are selected on criteria that ensure they have the education and/or relevant skills to support NFLA clients.
We do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. We offer people a safe, non-judgmental space in which to talk. We use a client-centered, solution-focused approach, drawing on family systems thinking to support you in understanding your situation and finding a way forward. While we don’t offer specialized therapy, we create a safe space where you can feel heard, supported, and not alone. Sessions for older adults are free.
